Question:

How does a US Citizen divorce a British citizen in UK?

They both live in the UK. They were married in the US but are now living in the UK. He says they are divorced but I am questioning this and do not want to get involved with someone who is not legally divorced. How can I find out for sure he is telling the truth?

Please I know that some of you will say if I can't trust him I shouldn't even go out with him. That is for another question. Thank you for any help you can provide me.

  1. Write to the US Ambassador in London and say you want this sorted out immediatley

  2. Well you can be legally married in one place, and not in another. The UK and US have different registrations.... so you can add that to the equation. Marriage is only a bunch of papers. Don't take that wrong, it should personally mean more than signed papers. But in the government's perspective, it is only a document.

  3. File the case for divorce in the US where the marriage was registered in the Civil Registry.
