I've been wondering how does a background check work and what database is used to perform one on a person? Do any minor offenses come up or bail jumping in another country?

  1. if it's for a job other than a federal job, the job you have hires a company (there are several)...Your name and social security number are run through a system...the company that is doing it is paid to find out certain things... it really depends on how much they want to know. Bail jumping will show up...(which by the way is NOT a minor offence)....and if there's a warrent out...you woudln't get the job.

  2. Sadly, it's not as easy of a question to answer as some would think. Background checks are a very difficult task to complete with any degree of accuracy especially when you are dealing with other countries.  Bail jumping in itself may or may not disqualify you for a job. Its the charge that the bail was assigned for that makes the real difference.  Technically, in some states not going to court on a speeding ticket can be bail jumping.

Most of the time there are a great many databases that companies use to check for backgrounds. Legally, if they are using a database, any criminal charges that are located on the database have to be verified with the reporting jurisdiction before they can be used to deny you a job.

If you are seeking any type of job that involves children, seniors or working for the government they will run a search through the FBI's database which is fairly accurate but only contains crimes within the US. If you do not report having lived in another country the background companies will likely not even search that country. There are only a handful of countries other than the US that have any accurate ways of tracking crimes. If you crime was in Mexico you almost have no worries about it as they do not have any sort of nationwide tracking system.

    I hope this helps.
