How does a bidet seat work on a regular toilet?

I see these toilet seats with built in bidets.. how do they work in terms of install? WOuld I need a special toilet to fit these seats or does it just go on my regular toilet? How would you connect the water to the bidet? I mean it sprays water so I assume a hose with a water source would have to be connected. where does this water source come from if I'm just using a regular toilet?

  1. While I haven't seen one in person, I'd imagine you would hook up the water to the same supply your toilet uses, that is from the wall/floor behind the tank.  While this is a fresh water supply, it is also a cold one...

I'll repeat that... A cold one.

Even if you were to hook up to the hot water supply, say from a sink tap, that water too is cold at first.

Special toilets are available with built-in heated bidets, the Toto company from Japan comes to mind.  Depending on the toilet, these may require a separate electrical hookup as well, or may simply operate on a small battery/generator with water pressure.
