How does a calculator work?

......Like how does a it do huge calculations in the matter of a press of a button??

  1. Calculators are similar to computers. They are programmed to do these calculations using the information stored in the chip.


  2. You may think they're huge calculations, but they're not. A huge calculation would be the lines of script used in a video game, or other program. On top of that, a calculator won't take more time unless you put in multiple equations/calculations, which you can only do on advanced calculators (IE-graphing calcualtors). So "2-2" will take the same amount of time as "29834.23423*2343.2343." If you put in something like "234*234=a  a/234234=b   b*345.345," that could possibly take more time to do. This, though, wouldn't probably be noticed. I think your average calculator has something like 10 FLOPS of processing power."FLOPS" is "FLoating point Operations Per Second." Basically, this means that a calculator can do 10 calculations/equations in a second. If it had 1 FLOPS of processing power, it could only do one calculation per second. If you put in two calculations it would take two seconds.

    And, yes...I'm a geek.
