How does a car insurance company decide whether they will cover if someone else was driving your car

I was leaving the pub the other night and my friend was driving my car home. As he backed out he backed into a minivan. I called my insurance since it was "my" fault and they are going to send out an adjuster and he will also determine if the company will cover since I wasn't driving. I'm worried they wont cover cuz I wasn't driving and its like $3,000

  1. They can't not cover you because you weren't driving.  As long as the driver had permission to drive your car, he is also covered under your policy if he hits someone else.  Don't let them BS you.  They will because they will be paying out.

  2. anyone who drives a car must have insurance. his insurance should cover it.

  3. It depends on the language in your policy. In general: most policies will cover other people that you let drive your vehicle - provided that the vehicle is not provided for that person's regular use.

However, since I don't have a copy of your policy - I can't tell you for sure.

Your best bet is to call your agent and check with them since they have a copy of your policy.

EDIT: and yes, the adjuster does have something to say about it. When you file a claim - it is the adjuster to investigates the accident and determines coverage (according to the law and the language in your policy).

Automobile policies are not all they same. In some states (usually Rate Bureau states) the policies will be almost identical.

However, in other states - the policies can vary a lot from one company to another.

That's why - I am referring you to your agent and your policy. What my policy says (or any one else's on YA) may be different from yours.

That's why it is best to follow up with your agent so you can get information about your specific policy.

  4. Wow, I can't believe all these people who claim to be insurance agents lying to you. Read your policy. I have State Farm and no one under 25 can drive my vehicles (period). No one who is not named on my policy is covered unless they have their own insurance that covers them driving other peoples vehicles. I am covered in any vehicle I drive. That's how they determined my rates. All companies do this. Some companies allow different things but, they still are covered in your policy. Called a contract.

  5. Any licensed driver can drive your vehicle with your permission (whether you are in it or not). The driver does NOT need to be named on your policy UNLESS he / she lives in your household. This is true on all Automobile Insurance Policies. The adjuster has nothing to say about it.

  6. Try getting an online insurance quote It's free and generally hassle free. http://www.autoadviceonline.com/Auto-Ins...

    Good Luck!

  7. from my personal experience, here is a good resource that is worthy of your time.http://car-insurance.online-tips.info/ca...

  8. For auto insurance the best way to get a fantastic rate is do a rate comparison on car policies. Make sure that you choose similar policies with the same deductibles, auto type, zip code, etc so that all things are a good comparison.

What I usually recommend is an internet comparison quote at http://www.InsureAutoNow.info since they have discount insurers and can give multiple quotes on car insurance polices.

  9. Unless your friend is specifically excluded from the policy they can't deny coverage.
