  1. You can't "become" autistic; you are born with it.

  2. We aren't sure but we do know that there are genetic factors and environmental factors that may trigger certain mutations in genes. I have had many students whose parents-brothers and or sisters were autistic as well so.

  3. If I knew the answer to that, I'd be a very wealthy woman!

  4. Some children seem to be developing normally until they are 1-2 years old-and then something happens-they seem to become autistic-they stop talking and interacting and start engaging in autistic like behaviors-no one knows why-they may be genetically predisposed liek someone can be predisposed to cancer, diabetes, etc

Some children seem to show autistic characteristics from the time tehya re born-exceptinally irritable-lack of eye contact etc..

I heard of one condition-where teenagers can become autistic-don't remember what it is-was on a documentray on a helath channel---it is not listed on the autism spectrum though-just mimics autism....

an adult can demonstrate autistic characteristics after some sort of brain trauma/injury-although this is not really considered to be autism.

  5. You are usually born with it as a genetic defect, but it is often not diagnosed until abnormalities start to appear in the child's development phases.

  6. You are born autistic. Most children with Autism are not diagnosed until the age of 3.

  7. i think its genetic

  8. From current research you are unable to become autistic. Autism is hereditary and no one is quite sure why at the moment.

  9. There are two main types of Autism...genetic being most common. They are now linking autism to childhood vaccines, ONLY for those whose genetic makeup makes them vulnerable. If it was the vaccine itself half the world's population would be in an institution by the early 60's. You should also note that high function autism is also being linked to high brain function people and careers.

  10. I do not believe someone wakes up autistic.

In my family it is hereditary, it has only been lately mild autism has gotten recondition however has always been around.

I think if a person is predisposed to the condition shots, environmental factors play a role in developing full fledged symptoms that were present but dormant. The autism scale is also growing......

I also feel miss diagnoses is happening everyday, just like other conditions.

    These days everyone has something.

  11. According to genetic research, autism spectrum disorders have approximately a 95% heritability. Heritability is not "If your parents have autism, you'll have it 95% of the time"; it's "If you have autism, 95% of the cause can be explained by exclusively genetic factors." This was determined by studying people who are more or less genetically similar: Identical twins versus fraternal; siblings versus cousins; half-siblings versus full siblings. The differences between those people are then related to the proportion of genes they share. With autism, they came up with 95%.

The 5% environmental aspect of autism is usually associated with things like childhood illness, seizures and head injuries, etc. and it is what makes the difference between nerdy-but-typical and mild PDD.

By the way, my family's a real proof of the heritability of autism. Both parents have Asperger's Syndrome; two out of three daughters are autistic; and the third is an introvert with autistic traits. (Incidentally, we are all quite happy being autistic, and glad to have been born; so none of this "why did she keep having kids" stuff, please.)

  12. You cannot become autistic, people with autism have a different brain setup than others, for example the part of the brain that deals with social skill has more brain cells in a person with austism but they are smaller and weaker therefore they don't work as well.
