How does a circus cannon work?

I am quite sure that it is compressed air, but i can't go into detail, can anyone say how they work?

Do you mean a cannon like they use to shoot a daredevil out of?  Wow!  I think you're right that it uses compressed air.  I think it powers a piston that the daredevil stands on until he's ejected from the barrel.  PLEASE post a video on YouTube when you test it out.
