How does a coconut retain it's water, and where does the water come from?

  1. Osmosis is the process that gets the water up the trunk and into the nut.

    The shell, the hush and flesh of the nut help prevent the fluid from escaping.


  2. Huh?

    The coconut is part of a plant. The tree sends fluid to the coconut to make it grow, just as any plant sends moisture to fruit.  This is like asking why oranges are juicy...makes no sense.

  3. The 'water' is actually liquid endosperm - it's part of the fertilization process. (You can read about liquid and cellular endosperm here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endosperm)

    I imagine that the oils in the cell walls of the nut/meat keep the liquid in the center.
