  1. Yeah.  There are two instruments called a compass. No idea why.

    One points towards magnetic North or South.  Very handy for navigation.

    The other lets you draw circles.  Very handy for drafting and a bunch of other obsolete skills.


  2. A compass is a navigational device containing a small,free-moving magnet called a  'needle'.The needle is attracted by the earth's magnetism.It swivels round on a pivot until one end points to the earth's magnetic north pole and the other end points to the magnetic south pole.

    A compass contains a little needle pointer that alligns with this field because it has tiny little plus and minus signs on the needle that always point to North. You rotate the compass to find the direction you want.

  4. It's a magnet that is affected by the magnetizm of the earth, which makes it point in the same direction all the time.
