How does a cordless tooth brush charge?

the base of the brush has no contacts,its totally sealed with no contacts that i can see,neither does the chargin base....any ideas...thanks

  1. Ah, this once mystified me too...

    The base has a coil in it, which is connected to the AC mains supply. The toothbrush also has a coil of wire in its bottom, so when the two are next to each other (but not touching), a voltage is induced in the toothbrush's coil, giving a current to charge its battery.

    Therefore, there doesn't have to be any metal-on-metal contact as the coils can be a couple of millimeters away for charging to happen.
