  1. Curtains help if there is a heat source in the room already. Glass can be an effective insulator, but ti depends on what you have. Curtains and rugs all help to insulate and keep the heat in.

  2. Depends on the type of glass and the construction of the window.  Usually it is a bit of a conductor and the curtain helps prevent the warmth from inside being transmitted through the window (the curtain helps slow or stop air circulation next to the window).

  3. Curtains being insulators trap a layer of air which is also an insulator, between the glass and the curtain. Thus, our room is kept warm as the heat from inside is not conducted outside.

  4. Glass is a poor thermal insulator. Hence in the winter heat readily escapes from a window via conduction, especially when the surface area of the window is high relative to the surface area of the walls. The curtain can help in winter because it places an insulating barrier between the window and the room. The curtain acts like a blanket.  Heat will still be lost between the inside and outside through the glass. But the curtain helps by preventing the cold air between the glass and the curtain from flowing into the room. Just as a blanket allows you to stay warm on a cold night. You will find that the space between the curtain and the glass on a cold day is significantly colder than the room temperature. Additionally, since the temperature between the outside and the space between the glass and the curtain  are closer to each other (low differential temperature) than the outside temperature and an unprotected room (higher differential temperature) the rate of heat transfer is less. So less heat can escape to the outside.

  5. Glass is a poor conductor.

Some glass has been treated for heating things, such as pyrex and kimax.

    Air is an insulator.

Curtains add a layer of air that does not conduct the heat out.

Heat always moves from hot to cold.

If there are sir leaks, heavy drapes help to keep the air from moving through

  6. Poorly constructed windows or windows in older buildings can be drafty and leak a lot of air.  Curtains help diminish the movement of the air - keeping warm air inside, and cold air out.

If the windows are well sealed and single-paned curtains would add a bit of insulation.  If the windows were double-paned and efficient and faced the sun, then curtains block the radiant energy of the sun and reduce the warmth in the room.

All solid materials are thermal conductors, but glass is a poor conductor (compared to metal).
