How does a flat ceiling affect the appearance of a living room versus a textured one - we're removing popcorn

My mom just did this to her older home a few months ago and then painted it a beige-ish color matching the walls, it look fabulous.  It updates an older home; really adds to the resale value.

a textured ceiling ....especially with popcorn... dates the living room back to the 80's

When you remove the popcorn ...it will give the room a more contemporary look.

If you paint the ceiling a  light color it will make the room look bigger.

Pay special attention to putting it great lighting before you finish the ceiling.  

Lighting is usually overlooked by amateur decoraters and is the one thing that 'sells' a room.  Proper lighting cannot be emphasized enough.
