Put simply, a guy becomes romantic when he cares enough about the object of his affections to put her happiness first. When that happens, he delights in doing nice things for her, making her feel treasured and thinking of new and inventive ways to make her happy. He will generally succeed more often as he gets to know her better.

If a guy doesn't appear to be romantic, there are two possibilities:

1. He doesn't know how, hasn't gotten to know you well enough, doesn't think it's the way to make you happy, or is trying but is very bad at it.

2. He is more in it for what he can get rather than what he can give.

However, with regard to reason no. 2, I can't say whether a guy might sort himself out if you gave him enough time, and also that dumping a guy because he doesn't put you first enough to be full-on romantic might also be considered selfish, so make sure you look at your own part in the relationship too. Are you encouraging romance, or are you just asking (or worse, nagging) about it?

In the end, romance is the overspill of genuine love for somebody. He won't do it because he must; he will do it because he cannot help but to.
