    And the word is HERBIVORE!


  2. many essential elements combine with other matter to form compounds which are difficult to break down and are virtually lost to the living world. Herbivores have the neessary enzymes and alimentary structures to break these compounds & release the "trapped" minerals/elements back into nature as waste products. then, other life forms can get nourished. since there is only a limited amount of each element in nature, herbivores help to complete the cycle of such elements and are thus an important link in the entire food chain/pyramid.

    one example is the cellulose found in grass - it is very difficult to break down in nature. however, herbivores have the enzymes to break it into smaller compounds & excrete it back into nature in forms that can then be acted upon & absorbed/ingested by others.
