  1. I would wager that it has to do with the mermaid's abilities of seduction. They can attract men like bears to honey, it is said.  They are apperently enough to make men drive their ships into rocks.

  2. I've never heard of that. Maybe the heart has something to do with the mermaid being female.

  3. Think of a mermaid's body. The waist is a v-shape because most mermaids seem to be shown with belly buttons or at least space for a belly button. The tail slims down to a point with a fin. Exaggerate the width of her hips, make it not so long and leave the fin off, and you have a rudimentary heart-shape. Also, there are a number of visual ideas about mermaids. One of the most diverse artistic differences is the shape of the fin. Most are shaped like a goldfish or dolphin. Some, however, are more like the side and back fins of a squid...essentially, the tip of the tail has a thin heart-shaped fin attached that is more for speed and manueverability than aesthetics.

  4. I'm not sure how a heart can relate to a mermaid, but if i had to guess i would say that a mermaid is a beautiful and caring ocean creature that everyone loves, and since a heart represent love and happiness, it can relate to a mermaid.

  5. the end of their tale can be kind of shaped like a heart?
