  1. Just like any other 4-cycle internal combustion gasoline engine.

  2. "Hemi" just refers to the shape of the combustion chamber in the head - roughly hemispherical.  The idea is that that shape permits larger surface area in which to cut holes for valves, so the valves in the hemi head can be considerably larger than for a typical non-hemi engine.  There are also so-called "pent-roof" heads that achieve the same thing.

Not all hemis are in Chrysler products, but only Chrysler products will be Hemis.  The engine in my Toyota has a hemi head, but that doesn't make it a Hemi.

Welcome to gearheadedness, bud.  You're going to burn up a lot of hours on this stuff.

Go to this site...it'll give you alot of info!

  4. The hemi is short for hemispherical and it describes the combustion chamber, which is shaped like a ball cut in two.  Chrysler at one time used two overhead rocker arms for each bank of a V8, one for intake and one for exhaust. Overhead cams have replaced that design.  They designed the combustion chamber to accomodate that larger design.  Over the years car engineers have tried EVERYTHING  to beef up an engine.  My favorite was Nissan's use of two sets of points in the older distributor, one for low speed and one for high speed.  LOL

  5. A hemi works just like any other four cycle engine. It derives it's name from the head design.
