  1. like the people about said you take the SAT's through the college board, but let me tell you (as one that was taught at home and went through this) the SAT is NOT a substitute for you High School diploma, so unless your mom is going about getting you your High School diploma, you are going to have to take the GED. You do not have to go to classes to take the GED, you can just pay for it and take it.

There are other ways of getting your diploma but it isn't the SAT. I am not sure how you go about that since my family just went the GED route. But remember the SAT is an aptitude test not a High School diploma.

  2. You find out what schools are offering the SAT and you sign up. I took the SAT in a school in upstate NY, and I live in Manhattan.

However, a high school diploma and the SAT are different.

  3. Visit http://www.CollegeBoard.com to find a testing center near you-it may or may not be a public school.  It does not matter if it is a public school and you are not a student there, you are still eligible to take the test there (so long as you are properly registered to take the test that day, at that location-that will be explained at the website).

Also, your mother can issue your high school diploma after you complete all of the requirements (hers and/or the states).  A diploma is more decoration than anything else-your SAT/ACT scores and your transcripts will be much more important.

EDITED TO ADD: In response to Katie, your parent and/or homeschool association will simply issue your diploma.  It is merely a decoration signifying a completion of something, and is perfectly legal for them to do so.

When you complete your high school education, whether it be by homeschool or traditional school, you have earned the title of "graduate".  Most prospective employers, and certainly no college, ask to see your diploma.  Colleges ask for your transcripts and test scores, not your diploma.

I just wanted to update this, because Katie is misinformed.  A GED is NOT necessary for a homeschool graduate-it is but one method of getting a diploma, but one issued by your parent is legal and valid, and does not carry the stigma of a dropout that the GED carries.

  4. go to collegeboard.com

    http://www.collegeboard.com/

then search in the upper right for SAT testing centers ...

they'll give you options ...  I don't know anything about you, so I can't fill it out and tell you directly where to go ...  but it will link you to testing centers near you and a way to register ...

  5. You can take the SAT just like anyone else - it's done through the College Board, not through the school.  You just register to take it at a specific site near you - go to the College Board website for info - and then just go take it.

As for your diploma, your parents award it once you've completed your coursework (that they set down for you).  They will need to keep records so that they can format your transcript - there is tracking software available to do this for them.  Homeschool Tracker and Edu-Track are two of the most popular.

    Hope that helps!

Edit: Katie, you don't have to get your GED in order to graduate - your parents can issue a transcript and diploma that is every bit as legit as one issued through a brick and mortar school.

  6. Everybody has given you the answers you need, but I wanted to clarify that the only way a GED leads to a diploma is if it is used to satisfy elective credits, and possibly gives one a limited amount of required credits.  Therefore, if you are close to graduating, but need electives, it's a great way to go.

GED stands for General Education Development, and is accepted by some employers and some colleges at good enough, but it is not a diploma.
