  1. It largely depends on the model you have, however one of the most common companies that produce these is Targus.

    Since there's quite a few variations on how these locks work it's hard to give you precise instructions, however in all cases there is one part of the lock assembly that has 3 very small fingers on it. These must be inserted into a small slot on the side or back of the laptop (usually there is small symbol next to the slot, like a padlock).

    Usually to get the fingers in you need to press a button or pull part of the assembly first. After locking everything up the fingers will not pull out of the slot unless you unlock it.

    Most of these locks work by wrapping the cable around something immovable. In some cases there is also an alarm assembly that prevents tampering somewhat.
