I've been researching and I want to get my lower lip pierced, in the center. But I have braces and I should be getting them off toward the end of this year. I would like to know, does having a lip piercing affect that treatment.

  1. Your ortho will probably tell you off for it; at my work he gives these patients an article he found about oral piercing.. lol. It doesn't really affect treatment except it can break brackets - unlikely though. But it can do more serious damage - it's easy to bite down accidently onto the bar & this can chip your teeth. Ask your ortho next time you go for an adjustment; he/she'll give you the best advice!!

  2. i pierced my lip in the middle(labret) while i had braces, i didnt have a single problem with breaking brackets, anyone who has been in this situation will tell you that your lip will tear before you break a bracket. it got stuck on the wire a lot, and trust me, it is not pleasant whatsoever when it does. i ended up taking mine out b/c of it. it didnt close, so i'm lucky, but its not fun. i suggest waiting til you get hem of. i know that's not what you want to hear, but it will be worth it, plus, it getting tugged on and such from the braces will keep it from healing anyway, so chances are, it will end up healing around he same time it wouldve if you just wait.

  3. It can push the wires and break off brackets
