1. This is for the ceremonies in the Beijing games...

The medalists approach and face the podium steps of different heights..the gold medal podium step is higher than the others....and it is in the center; the silver medalist podium step is to the right of the gold medal podium step and second highest; the bronze medal podium step is to the left of the gold medal step and the lowest one.

They do not go up on the steps until the P.A. announces their medals.

Three givers also approach, each with either a gold, silver, or bronze medal. If the medalists are ladies, the giver also has a bouquet of flowers. Often, in Athens, the medalists are given a bouquet of olives, but this is not at the Beijing games.

The P.A. system announces the words first in French, and in English, and then in mandarin Chinese.

"Ladies and gentleman, the bronze medalist, (name of athlete)".

The bronze medal is then placed by the giver, and flowers are given if the medalist is a lady. That medalist then goes up on the bronze podium step.

"Ladies and gentleman, the silver medalist, (name of athlete)."

The silver medal is then placed by the giver over the athlete's neck, and flowers are given if the medalist is a lady. That medalist then goes up on the silver podium step.

"Ladies and gentlemen, the gold medalist, and olympic champion.....(name of athlete)."

The gold medal is then placed by the giver over the athlete's neck, and flowers are given if the medalist is a lady. That medalist then goes up on the gold podium step.

Then, the P.A. system announces: "Please stand for the national anthem for the (name of country)." The national anthem is played on pre-recorded sound by a band...there is no live band. As the national anthem is played, the flags of the medalists' countries are raised on flagpoles. The flags rise high in the air at the end of the anthem.

You may remember some of the music from some national anthems.

For example, the French national anthem is called the "Marseillase"; the American national anthem is the "Star Spangled Banner", and the Chinese national anthem is called the "March of the Volunteers."

After the anthem is played (the music stops), there is a big applause from the crowd, and the P.A. system announces...

"Ladies and gentlemen, the olympic medalists!" The medalists then acknowledge the fans by raising their hands high in the air.

The medalists then pose on the podium steps for the press photographers who take their camera shots, with the medalists holding their medals front-and-center for all to see. This happens for about 30 seconds to 1 minute.

Afterwards, the medalists leave their podium steps and they wave to the crowd as they leave with the medals.

  2. The names of each of the 3 medal athletes are announced starting with Bronze, then Silver, then Gold. And as their names are announced, the medal is placed on each athlete's neck. Each also gets a bouquet and a handshake from the medal handler. Then they all stand on their respective steps on the medal stage as the three flags are raised to the playing of the gold medalist's national anthem.
