Question:

How does a motor controller works?

Hello,

I'm doing a project and I'm confused about the use of a motor controller. If I use a motor controller...does the motor still need to be connected to a battery? or just the motor controller needs to be connected to the battery?

I have found diagrams where the motor is connected to the controller and the controller is the one connected to the battery. is this how the overall system works?

Thank you

  1. The controller connects between the battery and the motor. The controller works by providing an adjustable voltage to the motor to regulate the motor speed. It converts the constant input voltage from the battery to a variable output voltage to the motor. If the motor is a brushless DC motor or anything other than a DC motor with brushes, the output to the motor may be more complicated, but the principle is the same.

  2. want to see how a electric motor controller works can go to your local hobby shop and find the ho scale or 1/24 scale model motoring race set.they have been using this method to control the speed of the electric race cars since the 1950's the atlas motor company first started back in the later part of the 50's then.aurora and now its the afx,or the revel company has this.so basically the power goes to the controller than to the motor the more windings you have on the controller the faster the motor will turn...
