  1. Has a policy that outlines the views, laws and proceedures that the nursery have in regard to anti-discrimination-this is signed by staff and parents (in most places) as an agreement that they will keep to these 'rules' in the setting.

Giving children independence and choice-this way you are not telling a child they CANT do something, or choosing an activity based on their gender etc. By giving children independence in supports them as they get older to say "no" if some is discriminative toward them.

Ensure that pictures around the room, the toys, playfigures, books etc do not steretype eg: not all Japanese wear Komonos! Shows a range of people eg: in wheelchair, single parents, wearing glasses, multi-cultural etc.

If you live in area where there are a lot of lagnuages show this in the setting-have labels in the chilldren's language/writing, sing rhymes from different cutures, get parent in to read to children in various languages/accents etc.

Never saying "thats a girls toy" or "thats a boy's tshirt" childrne should be free to explore different genders. If you hear children or adults being sterotypical then deal with it there and then and let them know its not acceptable.

---this is actually same for any form of discrimination or bullying.

Hope this gives you some ideas!

pS: business wise there's other things like ensure we treat families equally eg: flexible payment, prices so families can afford to send child, date of birth entry so children arent missed out in the intake etc.

  2. Bittersw...has a great answer. I would only add to that by saying, teach your staff to include the Dad's whenever they can as well. Often we call home in these situations and if the Dad answers we ask to speak to Mom. Have photos of Dads, and allows the little boys to be "daddies" to the dolls or cook and let girls play with trucks etc. Have disabled dolls too and do dramatic play with them teaching tolerance and compassion.
