  1. Appointed by the White House....Have good connections and know the land well...

  2. Most US ambassadors are Senior Foreign Service Officers, or people who've spent their careers at the Dept. of State.  However, many are indeed heavy financial contributors to the political party in question, and some are just well-known members of the party in power, in search of a job after losing an election, or someone the president owes a favor to, like George H.W. Bush in China or Walter Mondale in Japan. Some countries are so expensive that only very rich people can afford to serve there as ambassor, like Great Britain. The ambassador spends more money on liquor at official parties in London than he actually earns as ambassador.  No matter what route is used, the ambassador has to be nominated by the President and confirmed by the Senate.

  3. US ambassadors are either senior members of the Department of State Foreign Service, or they are political appointees.  In either case, the selection is made/approved by the President, and then subject to Senate confirmation hearings.

  4. most times you just donate a lot of money to a presidential campaign.

Payback is a  sweet U.S. ambassador job or something maybe FEMA

  5. Aren't they elected with the president?

  6. Donate a LOT of money to a presidential candidate that wins!

  7. yes, and this whole process of being beaten down in the state dept... needing vulgar amounts of cash etc... really speaks to our state of diplomacy and how it is we are hated all over the world.
