  1. To become an accountant who works under supervision requires a 4 year college education in Accounting.

To open your own business requires about 5 years work under supervision and more schooling for a Masters Degree and then you take a test to become a CPA.

  2. You have to go to college for 4-5 years, major in accountancy, get a degree, and then take the CPA (Certified Public Accountant) exam.  How much it costs for school depends on where you go.  You can save money by going to community college for the first two years -- just make sure all your classes will transfer to the 4-year college or university you want to go to after you finish your first two years.  To give you an idea:  Our local community college charges around $65.00 per credit hour for in-county residents (adds up to around $780.00 to $1,040.00 per semester for tuition, plus $200.00 to $400.00 for books and fees).  By contrast, the University of Michigan charges over $300.00 per credit hour for classes, so you're looking at $4,000.00 to $6,000.00 per semester for classes, plus books, fees, and room and board if you live on campus (my nephew lives on campus and it costs over $15,000.00 a year for room and board).

  3. To be a CPA you have to take 150 hours, 30 of those Jr and Sr level accounting courses.  And then pass the CPA exam.  Roughly 5-6 years.

  4. Requirements vary by state.  For example, in some states you must take 150 credits (rather than the normal 120) to graduate in Accounting and be eligible to take the CPA exam.  So this will take you 5 years rather than the usual 4.  You should look in to the requirements where you live, and also look into a variety of programs that interest you.

The cost is going to vary by school.  Public schools are cheaper, private more expensive.  Also be aware that most accounting degree programs are quite competitive to gain entry into.
