  1. Ah, the BBB is pretty useless.  There are three things you can check:

    1.  financial strength rating at www.ambest.com

    2.  you can get their annual report online, if they are a publically traded company, at www.sec.gov

    3.  you can check your state insurance department website, for complaints about that company.

    Or you can go to a local, independent agent, and let THEM screen the companies for you.
