In other words, my computer has been being accessed just through being plugged into AC power or the power grid. Has technology gotten that sophisticated so as to allow programmers to access computers that are not on line via cable or wireless?...just plugged into AC power?

  1. Its not possible for that to happen. Although you can get adapters to use the electric wireing in your house as a network, actually getting access to the pc through the power cable is impossible.

You haven't given any details about the access to your machine but it is possible for programes to lie dormant to a certain time

  2. No. Someone CANNOT access your computer if it is ONLY connected to power. This is IMPOSSIBLE. It doesn't matter what type of software/hardware anyone has. Again, Impossible.

There is Internet over powerlines, but, sorry folks. You'd have an adapter in your home and you'd plug in a CAT5 patch cable into that from the network card in your PC. Then, they'd access it just like they would any other computer connected to the internet. No need to "hack the grid".

I challenge anyone that reads this to remotely hack one of my windows systems (to make it really easy, I won't even put any updates on it except SP1) hooked up to nothing but power. No internet access at all. I would LOVE to see.

If you feel like someone has been accessing your computer, you must have some type of internet access. If it does not have internet access of any type, it's not hacking, it's something in your OS or perhaps a 2nd personality that does not communicate with the one posting on here accessing the system.

  3. While it is possible, you need a special kind of hardware for someone to gain access to your computer that way.  I would think that someone has been using it when you're not around.

  4. OK THEY COULD 1 HACK INTO THE POWER GRID AND GET IN THAT WAY, OR IF YOU HAVE A A WIRELESS CARD INSTALLED ON YOUR COMPUTER ( CONNECTED OR NOT ) THEY CAN REVERSE THE FEED, AND CONNECT YOU TO THEM, AND BASICALLY CONTROL YOUR COMPUTER!

  5. It's not possible if you were really only plugged into AC power.

What's more likely is you left wifi or bluetooth enabled (or didn't realize you were online - most computers automatically connect to wireless when it's in range) and they got in that way.

  6. A computer can be accessed through the AC line if you have a device connected to your computer to access the internet using the AC line.
