  1. The position and motion of objects can be changed by pushing or

    pulling. The size of the change is related to the strength of the push or pull.


  2. One simple machine that changes the direction of a force is the pulley at the top of a flag pole. You pull down on the rope and the flag goes up.

    With more pulleys, you can reduce the amount of force needed to lift something like an engine, because the total number of lines holding the weight are dividing up the total weight. You need to pull the line much farther because the total work done is the same.

    Work=force times distance

    force times distance=force times distance

    Using a lever to move a boulder, you push down to move the rock up
