How does a ski swap work? I am looking to trade in my head transition snowboard, burton mission bindings, and burton moto boots. What do I get for doing that (money, credit for purchasing other items?) and how do I do it? Having never done this before a thourough explanation would be much appreciated.

  1. Some places will take your gear on consignment if it's in good condition and has some resale value. If it's beat to snot they don't want it. If they think they can sell it, they may offer you credit towards gear at the swap. If you get $65 for a snowboard and you want a snowboard they have that is $100, you pay the difference.

Some places will not give you the credit, they take your gear and will cut you a check when they sell your gear, or they will tell you to come by and pick up your stuff if it doesn't sell. In this case, you pay full price for the stuff you want. A lot of times, in these cases, you can tag your gear for what you want to sell it for.

If the ski swap is fully run by a local organization, find out who the guys running the swap are and have them look at your stuff ahead of time. Most swaps I've been to are run by a consignment place. Often they work one swap one weekend and will move the operation to a new place the next weekend.

I've been to lots of ski swaps and only a few of them seem to be run the same way. Most tend to be the kind where you leave your stuff and then pay full price for what you want and hope someone buys your stuff.
