How does a telephone call reach it's destination?

they take the called number apart, and route it acordingly. the route is decided by loading, if the load is light on a cable it goes by wire, if the load is light via satellite, it goes airmail :)

all of this is determined by a computer and the phone number, tariffs, international agreements.
