How does a total newbie learn football?

Question

I want to learn how to watch and enjoy professional football games. Let's say I just landed from Mars, because that's the level of how little I know.

I don't want to memorize diagrams and rules, I want something more interactive. My goal is to go to a Superbowl Party and not fake it. Any suggestions?

All of these suggestions are great answers - but I've never been one for "reading" or "studying" and if you don't know the game now, then I highly doubt you would have any fun or learn anything picking up a football game and playing it.  The best way for someone to learn the game is simple - ASK.  My wife didn't know the first thing about football (nor did she care) but when our 7 year old was going to play for the first time, she began to get interested in the game and what was going on. She would sit down and watch and simply ask me questions during the game like "What happened?" "Why can't we do that?" "What is the yellow flag for?" "Why is that a penalty?"  Now 3 years later she is screaming at the refs "OFFSIDES!!" and saying funny things like "Ah man! that's coming back!!" (when our team just scored a touchdown).

By yourself a Madden video game and learn to play it.

Watch the games. The basics are easy. Offense gets 4 downs to advance 10 yards from the original spot. Try to score the most.

You're not gonna know a lot of stuff unless you study the rules just a bit, but like I said, play Madden. It'll give you the opportunity to try things you think you should be able to do and find out why you can't.
