How does a trans mount get broken?

I have a 2003 Windstar Limited that has a broken transmission trans mount. The car was in a front end collision 9 months ago and I think the trans mount was broken in the crash and it should have been fixed then. What other ways can this part break?

  1. metal fatigue is about the only other cause, because these parts are under a lot of stress with all of the weight they hold up, plus the engine and transmission are trying to twist while the car is running. Your car is too new for this to be the cause, it's the accident's fault.

  2.   Most likely the root cause was the accident. Doesn't mean that it broke all the way through then. I usually see them from where a customer has either ran up on something large enough to hit the engine/trans or from vehicles that see really rough roads. But you most likely damaged the mount in the accident so that it was either broken part way through or possibly all the way through but the force of the transmission held it in place so that it would be undetectable. Then you hit a pothole while driving on the freeway or drove over some rough roads and finally the break showed up.

  3. Hitting big dips on the road going fast like on a freeway. That is how I broke mine on my 92 Dodge van.
