In Football when a team uses two running backs how do they decide which running back they are gonna use?

  1. when theres differnet things like third and short, theyll typically use a the bigger guy. when its like second and long or first down or whatever, teams will probably use whoever is faster. excpet for the chargers. lt just takes it. whatever thats just the kind of runner he is


  2. There are different types. One type is you have a fast elusive back for most downs except 3rd and short and stuff. But the patriots have a different 2 back system they have Maroney as a every down back and instead of a 3rd and short back they have a 3rd and long back with Kevin Faulk as another receiving threat to get the first down.

  3. Generally you have a "Break-Out" Runner and a "Down Hill" Runner. For instance, last year the Cowboys ran a 2 back system with Jones and Barber. Jones was the break-out man, who would play most of the plays in the field, his job was to gain yards through speed and agility. Barber, being the downhill runner, would come in when the team was in the red zone, his job was to gain yards by running through defenders, rather than around.
