  1. It should be about five pages long.

It should contain 5 parts: 1. Thesis, or the argument you're going to make. 2. Supporting point 3. Supporting point 4. Supporting point 5. Summary.

In other words, tell 'em what you're going to say; say it; tell 'em what you said.

    Here's a small example:

I believe the War on Drugs is an abject failure, since it is racist, leads to more readily available and potent drugs, and is a waste of resources.

It's racist because it disproportianately targets minorities. Statistics show that while blacks use only 20% of the drugs in the US, they comprise 80% of inmates in our prisons. (give some additional statistics here from reliable sources to support this claim)

It leads to drugs being more readily available, since the street prices of drugs are consistently falling and purity of those drugs is going up. (Give some additional statistics here to support this claims)

It is a waste of resources since statistics show that more drugs are entering the country every year due to NAFTA and an increasing number of users. (Give some additional statistics here to support this claim)

As you've seen, the War on Drugs is a failure for the reasons I've outlined above. All the evidence indicates that the US should investigate other means to control the burgeoning drug problem facing our society.

I hope this helps, good luck!
