How does a variator kit increase the performance of a scooter?

dirty tricks got it mostly right. Most of the aftermarket variators also have a different angle on the drive face as apposed to stock. Oh and heavier rollers= faster acceleration top end is changed less. lighter rollers slower but better than stock acc,higher top speed.

It doesn't, it is actually too keep it from virbrating the bike so much.
