How does a water jet cutting machine cut steel yet not wear out the machine itself?

how does the automated cutting machines (that use water to cut metal) not wear out the machine that s applying the water.

  1. all it is is a mix between a sandblaster and a pressure washer. it wear out but at a slow rate because it was built to withstand the pressure its putting out and the abrasion that it causes


  2. A water jet uses a very hard tip, much harder than mild steel, but it still wears out. Although the pressure is in excess of 25,000 psi, a material, such as granite, is added to the water to make it cut. The more the tip wears, the wider the cut gets, called the kerf, and it also makes the cut at a slight angle because the stream is allowed to flare.

  3. It does wear out, but because the flow is along the surface instead of perpendicular it wears out more slowly.

  4. I think they do wear out, thats why they have to replace the jeweled part of the machine time to time.
