How does a waterfall cause weathering?

Water, wind, and ice are the main things that weather the earth. Water, as it flows, slowly breaks off little pieces and carries it on with it. Over time the river will carve deeper and deeper (like the grand canyon). Basically, water just breaks things down slowly as it passes over it.
