Marble is created when limestone or dolostone metamorphose due to great heat and pressure.  Limestone and dolostone contain calcium carbonate which is a basic composition, meaning that acid will break it down.  When an acid reacts with a base it causes a chain reaction that creates a salt carbon dioxide, and water.  For example when calcium carbonate (CaCO3) reacts with hydrochloric acid (HCl) it forms water (H20), calcium chloride (CaCl, a salt), and carbon dioxide (CO2).
