All these years I thought I had social anxiety and depression. Recently, I went to a doctor and they said I have ADD..which is causing the social anxiety, leading to the depression. So now I'm wondering how this happened. Also what I should do to unlearn the anxiety now that I'm being treated. and..Does anyone have any similar stories?

  2. I can only answer from personal experience.  I have begun to "act stupid".  I have a genius IQ but I am no longer witty or an organized person.  I don't have a "sharp mind"anymore.I am also bipolar and really get depressed.  As I write this I have been up for 5 days.  Sleep?  I just woke up from a 4 minute nap.

I think because we feel that way we think otrhers feel that way about us.  I don't think they do think abour us very much at ll, but I think our low confidence keeps us away from being with others.  I have told dozens of people that I feel like I will become an old lady surrounded by her 50 some kitty cats.  No phone, no neighbors, just me and the cats and I thinbk I wiuld be as happy as I am now.  I hate being around people.  It is so drainintg.

  3. The ADD makes it difficult for you to concentrate on one thing for any amount of time, conversations included. Even too many sounds can become bothersome and add to the ADD. Too much to choose from and a sufferer tends to go into overdrive, hence the attention deficit. You probably were not aware of this, therefore felt totally overwhelmed and panicked when in a social setting and determined that was the problem. In treating the ADD you would be treating its symptoms too..aka, social anxiety and depression.

I realized the same thing was true for me, without the depression though. I was put on Zoloft and it changed my life. Maybe something you can look into.

  4. You need to go to therapy, probably group therapy as well, to deal with the anxiety, depression, and even the ADHD.  ADHD as a child can often lead to a person being labeled as "bad" and make the child very self-aware of something they can not control on their own.  This would cause a person to be anxious in social situations because they're very self conscious.  Isolating oneself can be lonely, and loneliness is a big part of depression.  This is a complete conjecture and could be completely false, as I have no idea of your personal situation.  This is why you really need to see someone to work through the progression yourself.  A psychologist for talking, a psychiatrist for meds.
