  1. About 20% of the air circulated is pulled in from the out side. Of course if the room is tight there will be no place for the air to go.

  2. No any air comes from outside in the room through air conditioner. Compresser in AC takes heat from room & sends it in sink outside the room that you can feel outside AC a great heat.

  3. 20% of the air is not pulled in from the outside. An air conditioner is a closed loop system just as you suggested. They do not freshen the air, but they do make if feel better by removing moisture. If they have filters, they can remove dust and or pollen making air more breathable. If you have central air, you will notice a big unit outside and a different unit inside. Do you believe that air comes from the outside through that pipe to the inside of the house? Well it doesn't.

  4. There are two types of home air conditioners - one is split and the other window. In Split, the air is circulated within the room thereby cooling is faster and energy efficient but you end up with bad air uality as air is circulated. In window air conditioner, higher energy is consumed but you have the option to get fresh air as make up. So, you have to balance between the two when you purchase the aircon.

  5. I do not know the internal structure of an air conditioner. but it should be pulling fresh air from outside. Otherwise the oxygen content in the air will diminish to dangerous levels. The volume of this air should be low so that the temperature does not go up at the same time it should replenish the oxygen in the air.

  7. A window air conditioner can take fresh air in.

But Split type there is no such provision. However it will only be a problem when you use it round the clock and the room is fully sealed.

The external air will somehow sneak in or you can keep the room/hall open for some time.

In package units and centrally air-conditioned system(usually above 5 Tonne capacity)there is return air cooling system.
