  1. It is actually a light refraction phenomenon.  The same atmospheric conditions that promote thunderstorms also tend to refract light more toward the yellow spectrum, so it looks greenish.


  2. It's the result of clouds that are very dense with water.  Such clouds usually result in severe thunderstorms.
