How does an American couple get a divorce if they reside in Tokyo?

We are considered living in Japan by the US government and are having a tough time finding anyway to get a divorce in America. She is Japanese and I am American

  1. If you are living in Japan then you can get a divorce in Japan that will be recognized by the US Government.

    Hopefully that should answer most of your questions.

    If you are living in the US now, but were married in Japan then your marriage should be legally recognized by both the US Government and your State Government.

    So, I think you just need to file for a divorce just like anyone else. But, because international divorces can sometimes get complicated, I think you'd probably be best of consulting a divorce attorney and finding out what is what.

  2. If its a mutual consent divorce, go to the ward/city office where her family register is on record, fill out the forms, pay the fee and 15 minutes later you're divorced.
