  1. rpg's usually have a boosting charge of some kind which ejects the rocket grenade from the launcher after which the rocket ignites and brings the grenade up to what is called terminal velocity-the weapons normal speed-after which the grenade either detonates when it hits the something or detonates after a set time-say 6 seconds or so. The link give full and complete details on one of the most common types of rpg, the RPG-7. note that rpg functionality is similar for all types. also do not be confused with handheld anti-tank rockets like the bazooka(also known as the 2.36 inch rocket launcher)-these do not have the initial blasting charge, and ATGW (anti tank guided weapons) like the javelin-these can be handheld but typically have much longer ranges and heavier warheads.ATGW can also be guided in mid flight-with rpg's if the target moves, you miss.
