How does an egg turn into a chick??

When you crack an egg, its just the yolk and the egg white, How does it turn into a chick?? Is it the yolk that somehow turns into a baby??

The yolk is the food for the developing chick embryo which is in the white.  Sometimes in free range eggs you can see a smal bloody speck in the white - that I believe is what would develop into the chick if the egg had been suitably incubated.
