  1. Adam,

An  aircraft carrier uses its rudders to change directions at sea. In docking it can use reverse thrust on propellers to assist in "twisting ship."  The rudders on the Nimitz class ships are very large and are able to turn the ship in a surprisingly sharp turn. This is typical of navy ships. The Iowa-class battleships also had large rudders and could  turn inside a destroyer.

Follow this link and you will see one on sea trials trying out her rudder at speed. It is the USS John C. Stennis, CVN-74. The rudders are able to make the ships stern skid toward the turn,  causing the flattened sea inside the turn.

  2. like aileron on it's wing to move up & down.

every plane have a rudder on it's tail wing.

~rotate it to right side, air will push tail part to left . automaticaly nose will be shifted to the right .... and the plane moves on

    ~similarly to the left side

  3. Slowly

  4. It turns....

  5. It turns like any other ship, but the turning radius is pretty massive. Quite impressive really.

  6. the captain says turn right and they move rudders and pull some levers and it turns very very slowly to the right

  7. By one or a combination of the following:-

    1) Use of rudders.

    2) Use of differential thrust on the propellers.

    3) Use of 'bow thrusters' located at the fore (bow) and aft of the carrier..

  8. It can turn just like any other ship. Due to its size, and the fact it is an ocean only ship, it does require some room to turn around. On the other hand, they need to be as nimble as possible for combat maneuvers. They can turn quite sharp. The whole ship leans over in a hard turn and the deck slopes towards the outside of the turn a lot. So much that anyone standing on the deck needs to adjust his stance to keep from falling over.

  9. With a rudder and/or differential power, just like any other steamship.

  10. They bring up all their planes from the hanger deck - place them at the bow of the ship - point them in the direction that they want to steer - set their brakes - spool the jets up to afterburner - wait for half an hour and the ship turns.

    I thought everyone knew that.

If that doesn't work they just turn the rudder(s) of the ship but it's not as much fun.

  11. With 4 shafts, it can also use engine power to turn or aid in turning.

  12. ummmm, with a steering wheel and a rudder? stupid question really.

  13. It uses its rudder and turns just like any other ship. Strange question that really.

  14. captain orders a change in rudder
