  1. 1. The water in a river flows fastest at the outside of a river bend and erodes the outside bank.
    2. Erosion causes the neck of the loop to begin filling in, yet the water is still flowing through the meander.
    3. The narrow neck of land is disappearing. It has been broken through, which often occurs during flooding. The main flow of the river continues straight through, without looping.
    4. Deposition occurs at neck. The land separating the river and the lake encloses and the deposition has completely cut off the oxbow water from the main channel.
