  1.      Aparthied harmed blacks and whites in terms that it fostered contentment between the two. Blacks saw themselves as having lost their freedom. Whites were bereaved at the percieved ungratefulness of the local black populations, i.e under white rule the black child mortality rate went down, blacks were provided for the first time with modern infrastructure such as hospitals, were made sure that there was no starvation. When these same blacks not two decades before the arrivals of whites lived mostly in shanties. The question arose, should the blacks pay for living in a country with streets, cities, buildings, hospitals, schools, etc.. by losing their freedom? The blacks decided no. In the end the white government caved in and equalized all rights.

The current situation is a tough one. The black government is trying hard to re-appropriate white possessions and give them to blacks. However it is a tough issue. After all, can one simply give a business a white person build from ground up and exploited no blacks in creating it to a black person? It is causing lots of resentment on both sides. The South African economy is not liking it either. Since many whites instead of giving up stuff they worked their entire lives to build up, sabotage it instead so when the black owner finally wrests it from the former white owner per government vendetta they are officially the owner of little more than a worthless bankrupt endeavor. As well as quite a few whites simply liquidize all their assets and leave the country before their property can be appropriated.

Also violence. As the poster above me mentioned. Black gangs rampaging like animals; killing the farmer, raping his wife and then burning the 5 year old daughter alive has led to a rising hatred of whites in South Africa for blacks. In 2007 over 100 farmers were brutally murdered by Black gangs.

However the Boer (dutch descended) farmers are a hardy bunch. They're taking another approach than leaving such as their English South African compatriots. Instead their moving together into all-white enclaves. Seeking protection in the masses. This is concerning the government, as whites are moving very centralized. As well as following a strategy of ethnically cleansing their areas of any blacks by buying them out and evicting them. There are already calls from several of these white enclaves for the formation of an all-white nation in the areas where they form 90% majorities. The South African government rejects that it will accede to such requests. However according to Time magazine yearly the perception of using violence to secede from South Africa is winning popularity among the Boers. This could get nasty, since most of the South African military is still white, especially the air force and special forces. The question would arise would they be loyal to their ethnicity of their government in the case of a conflict.

Also to give you an idea of how many whites there are in South Africa. They are 14% of the population. Seeing as for example blacks in the US make up only 13% of the US population. There are as many whites in south africa in proportion to it's population, as there are blacks in the US to the proportion to it's population.

  2. the most harmful thing that came out of it is was the fact that it pit group against group. whites were so racist and discriminative that once the apartheid ended, blacks were pissed. white are being killed and dismembered in the streets by gangs of armed black males. they are now leaving the country. if there was equality, none of this would be happening today. now whites are complaining about being 'targeted' by black gangs. what goes around comes around. the economy is rebounding just fine, just because whties left doesn't mean anything, you have to take one step back to take one step forward.
