  1. By seeds.  As with other grain crop plants barley's a kind of grass.  Those lumpy bits growing at the top of the plant are the seeds.  You should be able to recognize them from some tv adverts for cornflakes.  Even if the stuff being shown is wheat, that's good enough to get the general idea.
