How does berkshire hathaway work? how did it get started?

I get that its comprised of a bunch of big name companies. But that's about it. Does buffett own the big name companies like coca cola, etc. like did he buy them, or does he just own a bunch of their stock? If so, they are only blue chip stocks, so how is the bershire stock so hige? Did he buy the stocks when they were just starting, or what? I need to know as much as possible, please, and thank you.!

It's a conglomerate holdings company. You can read pretty much the whole story from the link below. They own stocks in large companies as well as entire companies. The stock price is so high because it has never split...pretty amazing, but needless to say, a good way to keep speculative buyers from purchasing your stock.
