  1. Braces straighten your teeth by applying pressure to the teeth and moving them into a pattern so they are straight, that is what the tension of the wire does, give constant pressure

they will hurt for the first week and then you will begin to not even notice that they are there

  2. YEA it puts pressure on the teeth causing them to move over time

  3. Each little bracket is attached to a tooth and the wire, and they all want to stay nice and neat on the wire so they pull your teeth with them into line, its just a constant mild pressure slowly pulling everything into place! :)

  4. Hello...The reality is that the braces do in fact pull and tug on the teeth. In some cases they actually make the tooth slightly loose in the bone or the tooth couldn't move...Braces also twist teeth...What you don't hear about is the fact that down in the tooth's socket, their are tiny ligaments and muscles that attach between the tooth body and the bone socket. As the tooth twists and moves those ligaments and muscles are pulled out of their original placement. Once the teeth are twisted and moved into the new position and the braces are removed you will be given a "Retainer" appliance that must be worn from "now" "on"...and that's a hard fast fact...You will always need to wear the retainer at least six to eight hours a day...Those little ligaments and muscles will "always'" want to return to their original position and if you fail to wear the retainer they will do exactly that....Good luck and I wish you well.

  5. The wires on the braces gradually move the teeth in the direction that the orthodontist wants them to go.  You will probably have appointments every 3 to 6 weeks and they will get adjusted.  In addition you might have rubber bands which help to move specific teeth.  Take some Advil or Tylenol for the pain (if you have any).  It will go away after a few days.  Tylenol PM works great at night (probably take only 1) if you have pain at night.

They are a pain but they are worth it in the long run.
