  1. Caller ID (caller identification, CID, or more properly calling number identification) is a telephone service, available on POTS lines, that transmits a caller's number to the called party's telephone equipment during the ringing signal, or when the call is being set up but before the call is answered. Where available, caller ID can also provide a name associated with the calling telephone number. The information made available to the called party may be made visible on a telephone's own display or on a separate attached device.

Caller ID may be used to track down or limiting the impact of prank calls, telemarketers, and other intrusions. However, it can also impede communication by enabling users to become evasive.

The concept behind caller ID is the value of informed consent; however, it also poses problems for personal privacy.

  2. Caller ID works by the transmission of a data burst typically after the first ring.  If you monitored a line without answering the phone, you would hear a shhhh sound that was the burst going to the phone on the other end.

This is provided by the central office when the originating call comes into your local switch.  It knows you have asked for this data burst and provides it to you.  It is then up to your phone, caller id box, or whatever to interpret it.

    Hope this helps.

  3. It is a service you pay for monthly, call your local provider to see how much it is or go to their website.  You also have to have a phone or device with the screen capable of reading the caller id info.  It will display the Name and # of who is calling so you can screen your calls.

  4. caller ID is data that is superimposed on the phone line that is placed between rings.

  5. It is in any telephone directory.

Find the one for your provider and read it, call customer service and ask them, they work the same but codes may be different.
